Finding a way to capture the ancient lava flows found in Southern Utah is no easy task, couple things we wanted to avoid were the typical photographs that show the vastness of the flows and the typical images that show how harsh the flows once were. We wanted to find a location that would show the softer side of the flows that ran their course throughout Southern Utah forming the land we enjoy today. So in order to try and capture the softer side of the flows we decided to explore the lava tubes underground. Arriving at the caves we were blown away by the colors and shafts of light pouring in, it was breathtaking to say the least. The ancient lave tubes created the perfect backdrop for us to create the surreal image we have dubbed “Electric Underworld”. The colors in the tubes come to life as the sun passes the high spot in the sky creating giant shafts of light pouring in giving the cave a warm feeling. Look closely at the shaft of light in the background and it almost appears as if lava is still flowing into the cave, the lighting was simply amazing and we nailed the shot creating a truly unique view into the ancient lave tubes that helped shape our amazing landscape.
